St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital Foundation

For more than a year, when older adult patients are admitted to the Senior Acute Care Unit of St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital, a team of specially trained nursing staff using the NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthcare Elders) model of care addresses patient needs in the area of dementia, pressure ulcers, falls, sleep and incontinence. Since the NICHE program was implemented, fewer ulcers have been found and the use of sedative medications have lessened, while an understanding of patients’ needs has increased. Grant funds will help support the expansion of the NICHE program to all hospital units by creating systemic changes that support nurses in their efforts to improve quality care for older patients and include enhanced education and training in gerontology.
